The University of Nevada, Reno seeks a librarian with a strong commitment to public service to manage its internationally-known Basque Library. This is a tenure track library faculty position reporting to the Director of Research Services. This position establishes goals, priorities, and policies for the Basque Library. The chosen candidate will develop, promote, and deliver customized library services based on knowledge of Basque information resources. In-depth research assistance to on-campus users, including visiting researchers from the Basque country and around the world, is a major facet of the position. He/she will be expected to create and promote positive relationships with the Basque diaspora, particularly the Basque community in the United States. The Center for Basque Studies, an active research group, occupies adjoining space in the library and is a vital part of the University's commitment to the Basque community. The successful candidate will work closely with this department to determine their informational needs. The library includes a large collection of periodicals, archives, photographs, audio, video, electronic materials, posters, slides, and ephemera from publishers in the Basque country and in the Basque diaspora. This position develops, maintains, and promotes this collection while cultivating relationships with international vendors, other libraries, and institutions in the Basque country. The University of Nevada Reno, the major research institution in the state, is located only thirty-five miles from beautiful Lake Tahoe. With a student body of over 16,000 the University's main campus is in Reno, a metropolitan area of over 300,000 situated on the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevadas. We are currently in the process of building a beautiful new facility, the Mathewson/IGT Knowledge Center. It will house all campus libraries, including the Basque Library and the adjacent Center for Basque Studies, beginning in the Fall of 2008. This position offers an excellent opportunity for a serious Basque scholar to engage in research, publication and service activities as well as working with an established library staff to articulate goals, policies and service objectives to the University community and other clientele. Qualifications include an ALA accredited MLS or equivalent international degree in library science; two years of professional-level library experience; ability to communicate orally and in writing with users, vendors, project partners and co-workers in English and Spanish; potential to meet requirements for university tenure and promotion. Preference will be given to candidates with strong commitment to innovative and effective user-centered services; web development skills and knowledge of emerging technologies; excellent interpersonal skills; knowledge of the Basque language and culture; knowledge of French; andsupervisory experience. Compensation: Salary range $46,305-$71,239 depending upon experience.TIAA/CREF and other retirement options; 24 vacation days per year;generous sick leave. No state income tax or FICA.
