Climate

In Euskal Herria there are four different climates: the oceanic, the transition oceanic, the continental Mediterranean and the mountain climates.
  • Oceanic climate

Located on the Cantabrian coast, north of Araba, Regional Community of Nafarroa and in Iparralde, except in mountainous areas. The annual rainfall is over 1,000mm, and is more abundant in winter than in summer. The average temperature in winter is between 8 and 10ºC and 18-23ºC in summer.

  • Transition or inland oceanic climate

It covers the watershed of the Cantabrian and Mediterranean seas, the pre-Pyrenees basins, the Plains of Araba and the north of Middle Nafarroa. The annual rainfall is between an average of 600 and 900mm, especially in autumn and winter. The average temperature values decrease as regards the oceanic climate and frost is common in winter. The annual thermal range has also increased as regards the oceanic climate.

  • Continental Mediterranean climate

Located in La Rioja Alavesa, Ribera nafarroa and in the Southern sector of Middle Nafarroa. Rainfall of less than 500mm, concentrated in the equinoxes. Very dry summer, and some months there can be a drought and aridity, with average temperatures of 22º. Strong thermal range, which can reach 20º C, very cold temperatures in winter and hot temperatures in summer.

  • Mountain climate

Mountainous areas of the Pre-Pyrenees and the mountains of the watershed. Temperatures below zero in long winters and cool temperatures in summer. Rainfall of over 1,000mm, often as snow.
