The literacy process in Spanish and French

The introduction of new laws of education (Guizot Law of 1833 and Moyano Law of 1857), contributed to the acceleration of the literacy process in Spanish and French.

The Department of the Atlantic Pyrenees presented greater levels of literacy than the territories that surrounded it, like the territories of Hegoalde, which had higher levels than the general levels of Spain.

As the most important features of this process, we can mention the higher rates of literacy in the provincial capitals as regards the rest of the province, the rapid advance in the literacy process of women and the extraordinary level of literacy reached by Araba. Bizkaia and Nafarroa occupied the intermediate places and Gipuzkoa was in the last place, with high rates of illiteracy, although, it did not reach the state levels.
