Gernika’s Jai Alai celebrates its reopening

After a year of refurbishment Gernika Jai Alai will reopen. Major acoustic improvements and maintenance upgrades have fixed cracks, water leaks and flooding damage. With these upgrades the venue can be a premier venue for other special events in addition to pelota.

The long awaited reopening of the Jai Alai of Gernika is scheduled to open Friday, June 13th.  It has been under maintenance repairs and building upgrades this last year.  The town council of Gernika has invested 650,000 euros for these improvements to the fronton.

While fixing the problematic leaks, cracks and other time and flood-related damages, major acoustic improvements have been accomplished, thus enabling the fronton to be used as a venue of choice for other events requiring refined acoustic qualities.  Julen Galarza, city sports councilman, said that they achieved a level of acoustic quality that any other theatre can provide.  The objective of the fronton overhaul was to house other types of spectator events in addition to pelota.  One inconvenience of the makeover has been that the fronton's seating arrangement has gone down to holding around 1,800 people.

Aitor Totorika, manager of the firm Master Jai and general manager of the fronton work stated that Gernika’s Jai Alai will be the most important fronton in the world.
